Between July and August, my garden got limited attention and then by August, it looked like a giant weed patch. Even as a raised bed garden, and it is small, it took hours to clean out the weeds and plants. I cannot image a larger garden, but I am sure anyone with a large garden, does a better job at caring for it than I do with mine. (AKA don’t let it become an unmanageable jungle).
After the jungle was cleared, I decided to plant a fall garden but was limited on seeds. I didn’t realize that stores send back seeds they don’t sell which makes sense but makes it hard to purchase seeds later on in the summer. Green vegetables do well in cooler in temperatures and so does root vegetables.
This fall planting included:
- Sunflowers
- Radishes
- Green beans
- Lettuce
- Kohlrabi
Everything but the lettuce has come up (not sure why the lettuce didn’t grow, and I always grow lettuce in the summer). The green beans are spotty but are growing. My mint plant is taking over the garden and needs trimmed back (a lot). I will be happy to get some vegetables out of this second round and glad that I reclaimed the garden. I love working in the garden, but it is a lot of work. Even a small garden takes time and organization.
While getting seeds, I did get some mums and can’t wait for pumpkins! I am VERY ready for fall!
Your greens look great! I’m hoping to have a small garden next spring!
